20 years ago the thought of Men visiting local salons or spas for pedicures, manicures and facials was not a consideration for most Men. Fast forward and today's salon atmosphere is more neutrally inviting and the very same services that Women enjoy are now offered for Men as well. Men deserve to feel good and look good just like Women. Most Men desire simple and basic services without all the fuss. Clean and trimmed fingernails and toenails will often suffice. A great pedicure with all the bells and whistles is surley a treat in itself! Some Men truly like to indulge in to more specific services like facials. Facials are great for Men that need help with skin discoloration, acne or other issues that affect the condition of the skin on the face and body. Taking care of the body from the inside out is not gender specific and should be something that we all strive to incorporate into our daily lives. |

![]() Being pregnant for some Women and keeping yourself together can be challenging. Below are a few tips that will help to ease your transition into Motherhood. 1. Continue to do mild forms of exercise to keep your body toned during pregnancy. Keeping some form of consistent exercise routine while pregnant will only help to keep you motivated well after you have given birth. tip: Make sure your physician approves any form of exercise. 2. There are 7-days in a week. Pick one day out of the week where you dress up and show up looking your best, even if you don't feel like it! 3. Make sure to fit a good skincare routine into your schedule; when your skin feels and looks good...you feel good too! 4. Get a pedicure with a bright color! Studies have shown that bright colors can brighten up your mood. Even on a bad day, pretty toes can make everything all right :) 5. If you are first time MOM, joining a Maternity group in your area may be a good idea. Sharing ideas and tips with other MOM's is a great way to connect with other Women. If you go to your local corner salon, chances are you have had your cuticles clipped for each and every manicure because you assume that this is what comes with getting a manicure. Walking away with clean and well groomed nails is why you visited the salon anyway, but did you know that there are alternatives to clipping the cuticles.
Clipping the cuticles should be the last resort and should only be done if it is visible on the nail and in excess or if you have hangnails. So what is cuticle? In simplest form, it is a thin layer of skin that covers the nail plate and the by product of the eponychium. It is there to protect the base of the nail and nail matrix from bacteria and infection. People often get manicures to remove the cuticle and with the proper implements it can be removed for cosmetic reasons. A cuticle pusher and solvent typically does the job for removing excess cuticle and buildup. Hangnails are hard pieces of keratin/skin and can be painful and cause infection if not removed. Cuticle nippers are great for removing hangnails if used properly. Applying a cuticle oil regularly will help keep hangnails at bay. Ultimately the decision to remove excess cuticle is that of the client and with the right tools and a trained hand, you should be just fine. Enjoy your manicure! ![]() The term Solar Nails became quite popular in the 90's and still today there are clients that ask for this service without truly knowing what they are asking for. For the record Solar Nails is nothing more than an acrylic. The name Solar is basically a brand name for acrylic. The same way you have brand name polishes like Essie, OPI and Creative Nails; the same concept applies to acrylic powders. Some salons will up charge their clients for Solar Nails and unbeknownst to the client, they are unaware that they are paying for a regular traditional nail service. There is also another misconception with clients to what gel nails are. A true Gel Nail is completely liquid in form. If a Nail Tech applies a powdery substance to your nails as the foundation and then towards the end of the service applies a liquid gel top coat for shine as the gel; what you have received is an acrylic service with a gel top coating. The term gel nails can be misleading if you are clueless about what gel looks like or the application process. It is the responsibility of your Pedicurist or Nail Tech to give the client what he or she expects to receive for the money they are spending in your establishment. As a consumer you have every right to question your service provider for more clarification on the process and what products are being used. Always ask questions. Do have questions? Pedicures are such a favorite treat and truly enjoyable and people from all walks of life can attest to having a delightful pedicure at some point and time. Even though the experience can be pleasurable I can almost assure you that most if not all have wondered if the Whirlpool spa was clean or not, and for good reason. Most corner salons and even some of your more upscale places typically have those big pedicure thrones as the primary means of doing pedicures and boy do they feel GOOD! But let's discuss for one moment the safety of these thrones. Recent articles have been circulating across the web from various sources and the common thread denominator is about how the pedicure thrones are cleaned for the safety of the clients that enjoy them. Most beauty schools across the nation have a code of universal precaution when it comes to proper protocol when it comes to cleaning pedicure bowls and whirlpool spas. It is mandated that they be cleaned using a Hospital Grade/EPA certified solution and/or Bleach. The question is whether or not the salon provider is actually cleaning their thrones and basins the correct way. If not cleaned properly pedicure thrones can harvest bacteria in the pipes which can then be transferred to the client. The only way to avoid this potential hazard is to ensure that each pedicure throne is cleaned properly and that the internal pipes are flushed for at least 10-minutues between each client service. The other option is the use of a pedicure bowl. Pedicure Bowls are becoming more popular and you tend to see them at salons that offer more organic and holistic services. They are a lot easier to clean and because they are circular and don't contain internal piping the likelihood of transferring bacteria from client-to-client is lessened greatly. As a consumer, it is okay for you to question your Pedicurist or Nail Tech on how they clean their foot thrones, bowls and implements. We want our client's to look and feel good and feel confident about getting their services done with cleanliness and safety as the top priority. |
